“Napoleon said ‘history is written by the winners’. He might also have said ‘And painted by the rich’. The result is a gross distortion of our past.”

BACKGROUND STORY

“Portrait of Heroes” is the latest collection inspired by master painted portraits that reveals how classical art was often a means for wealthy individuals to portray their ultra ego. It playfully suggests that the classical portrait artist was the photoshop and Instagram filter of their time.

Today we all have the ability to take selfies and live our lives through social media. But how much of what we share is real and how much are we all trying to heroise our lives?”

“Napoleon said ‘history is written by the winners’. He might also have said ‘And painted by the rich’. The result is a gross distortion of our past.”

BACKGROUND STORY

Andy Warhol famously said “in the future everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.” What he was referring to the rising impact that TV and broadcast media was having on society at the time.

Perhaps if Warhol were alive today he would say that everyone will be famous for 15 seconds, before our attention is taken away by a new message, digital notification or social media post.

Today we all have the ability to live our lives through social media. We jostle to portray seemingly perfect lifestyles, broadcasting ourselves to potentially millions, in the hope of more ‘likes’, more adulation, more momentary hits of joy.

But how much of what we share is real and how much are we trying to heroise our lives?”

If art provides our future sense of history, in two hundred years, will our era of perfect selfies, filtered portraits, and staged videos fool people into believing that we were living in a golden age?

“Napoleon said ‘history is written by the winners’. He might also have said ‘And painted by the rich’. The result is a gross distortion of our past.”

BACKGROUND STORY

The “Portrait of Heroes” collection is based on original artwork from the early nineteenth century, a period of massive growth and change in northern Europe as the industrial transformed the fabric of society. The original portraits depict rich, confident, strong human beings, suggesting a time of great abundance and health.

Classic art, especially when curated in national galleries and esteemed intuitions, is often presented as being representative of a time.

The reality though was often very different. During the early days of the Industrial Revolution a chronic lack of hygiene, a population boom, and a lack of knowledge of medicine, lead to fearsome epidemics of Cholera, Typhoid, and Smallpox; between 1800-1850 Tuberculosis alone killed one third of the population of Britain. At the same many were losing their jobs to mechanization, there were huge disparities of wealth, and violent outbreaks of civil unrest.

The Better Days exhibition is intended to question both our view of the past and how we represent ourselves in the present.

Were those really better days?

“Napoleon said ‘history is written by the winners’. He might also have said ‘And painted by the rich’. The result is a gross distortion of our past.”

BACKGROUND STORY

Napoleon once said that ‘history is written by the winners’. He might also have added ‘And painted by the rich’.

Today we think of Napoleon as a short fat man with a bad comb-over, as this is how portraits painted after his death depict him. Portraits made while he was in power though showed a very different man – tall, athletic, handsome. Were these earlier pictures the vanity projects of an all-powerful leader? Or – as some historians have suggested -  were the later portraits intentionally revisionist depictions seeded by the conquering British who wanted to portray him as absurd?

“Portrait of Heroes” was inspired by this question.

Classical art was a means for wealthy individuals to portray how they wanted to be seen. In their portraits skin is always perfect and clear, they are handsome, beautiful and strong, but the reality was most likely very different.

The subverted “Portrait of Heroes” pieces playfully suggest that maybe the classical portrait artists of the past were really the Photoshop and Instagram filters of their time.
